36 Hours in Istanbul 2017

We may only have had 36 hours in this magical city but our careful planning meant we packed a lot in. You can read about the plan and what we got up to here; and below, just a few images to entice you to visit.

Lovely dinner thanks to fabulous @pipersfarm duck legs which I glazed with my homemade marmalade and slow roasted, with duck fat potatoes and peas. The sauce is @truefoodsltd stock with a tiny touch of orange and a slight reduction making it sticky but still with a lovely flow over those scrummy potatoes, An old classic I know but sometimes they are worth digging out and reliving. Then I understand why they became classics in the first place. #happyhusband ❤️ .
Well with sub zero temperatures outside you can forget sitting in the garden and socialising. Ever since Boris said we could it’s be freezing round here. So heading out for a hike with @mariiphenomlet and the husbands and home to a hearty ox cheek cottage pie. I made two weeks ago and thankfully froze one so no cooking today 👏. Time to go dig out the thermals I think. .
I am judging this mega-fun pie competition open to all kids aged 5 - 15. We want to see their wildest, craziest ideas for a pie. There are some great prizes too. You can see more over on Vale of Mowbray’s website, linked in my profile with details of how to enter. GO FOR IT !!!
Easter Sunday and not a sign of chocolate in this pudding. I haven’t made treacle tart in so long and something triggered a memory and an urge to make it. For someone who does not have a sweet tooth it’s an odd one to make given the amount of golden syrup and black treacle but this also had a touch of sea salt which tempers it down and l love salted caramel so was worth a try. It worked. I can’t decide if there was tad touch much salt (do say @mummyfit_eastleedsandhull - a treacle tart fan and recipient of a chunk of this one) the husband who is a massive sugar fan liked the hit of saltiness. So lovely to have the family here yesterday albeitoutside. ❤️
Feeling sad for everyone who has suffered in so many ways in this past year. The light in our lantern is for all of those who lost their lives in this year of Covid and our beacon of hope for the future ❤️#maureen #thankyounhs #dayofreflection
Spurred on by @annicemacleodphotographs I decided to come out too. This is the first time I entered and I nearly fainted when I got the e-mail last week. This famous international competition had 10,000 entries so to be shortlisted is so awesome, but I have kept quiet about it, I only told my sister, husband and one of my bestest friends initially. So here I am and still feel shy about it because some of the photographers are utterly awesome, but I am just a little bit proud 😊
March, Yorkshire, Spring Equinox, lunch outside. Happy people 😊I feel a glimmer of hope. 🙏 .
Off the top this is not my image but from @food52 it is of my recipe they commissioned. I love how they have portrayed it and feeling just a bit proud. Check out the recipe for this awesome Easter Pie over on the site (link@in my profile) and I’m more than happy if you want to give me a follow there as there’s other lovely stuff to come. I don’t normally do shameless self promotion 🤣🤣🤣🤣. .
Oh dinner ordered in from @berenjaklondon, the renowned Iranian restaurant. We so enjoyed assembling and cooking but we ordered too much food. We managed the awesome mezze, the rest is for another day. What a treat on a miserable Saturday evening in Yorkshire. .
I love the freedom tulips assume, going where they feel happiest and no amount of arranging will stop them. If I have to be a flower, it will be tulip. The design classic Swedish vase supports the tulips free will, thank you @erleman for buying this for me all those decades ago. It’s still my favourite. To all my amazing women on International Women’s Day 2021 x
The last day of the Guild of Food Writers challenge, the word is underneath. That has many connotations but for me, this image of a hugely momentous moment was with two of my best friends who had taken me to Iceland for the big birthday, we were laying on the ground underneath this awesome site. The Northern Lights had been playing up for months at the time and we had been warned. But I was armed with my big camera and fish eye lens (thanks to husband) and they danced in all their glory for us. There no filter on this image, this is how they appeared through the lens. I do apologise, I think I may have used this image in a past challenge but it remains one of my favourites. Thank you @thegfw for organising the challenge it’s been fun #TheGFW2021 #TheGFW28
I personally don’t do sweet (today’s challenge word) I much prefer savoury and I’m sure I am not alone? What a challenge this was when the commission landed on my desk! This bouncy confection is a Japanese cotton cake, it is astonishingly light and — when cooked and cooled — will jiggle with the gentlest of prods. It's similar to a chiffon cake but even airier and surprisingly sturdy and better still, is not overly sweet or cloying as most cheesecakes are (to me). I was rather chuffed with it. #TheGFW2021 #TheGFW27
